Recurrent Work / Book

Images of Heather Watkins – Recurrent Work, recently published in conjunction with my one-person exhibition at The Art Gym at Marylhurst University. The book features two exquisite texts – a spatialized poem, and an essay – by Stephanie Snyder, Director and Curator of the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, Portland, Oregon. The book's design, beautifully executed by Adam McIsaac / Sibley House, includes over one hundred work examples, with emphasis on ink- and fiber-based works created over the past five years.

APEX: Heather Watkins at Portland Art Museum

APEX: Heather Watkins, a solo exhibition at the Portland Art Museum, is on view until October 20, 2013. The exhibition includes a new sequence of my ongoing drawing series Surfacing (2008-present); two fiber-based sculptural works (Medium and Medium II, 2013); Transcript (2013); a 25-foot scroll drawing; and Sessions (2013), a series of archival digitally-printed folios. Funding for this exhibition was provided by a Career Opportunity Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission and The Ford Family Foundation.

The Portland Art Museum's APEX series presents the work of four contemporary northwest artists each year. Binding Repository 2009-2011, a limited edition book that accompanied my exhibitions last August at PDX Contemporary Art, and at the Edith Feldenheimer Gallery at Reed College. The book is comprised of edited excerpts from notebooks – a window into the thinking that informs my work. Edition of 100, hand-bound, offset and digital printing, 48 pages with paper jacket. Gradual Instant: Lithographs

Six lithographs made in collaboration with master printer Mark Mahaffey of Mahaffey Fine Art in Portland, Oregon. Three images are printed in two color sets: white ink on black glassine, and black ink on Kozo-shi. This project was funded in part by an artist's project grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council. The prints were presented in the exhibition Gradual Instant at the Edith Feldenheimer Gallery at Reed College, August 20-September 15, 2012. (Installation images of that exhibition below.)

From April-July, 2012, I worked with Mark Mahaffey of Mahaffey Fine Art to produce two new lithographic print series, which were exhibited in August at PDX Contemporary Art and the Edith Feldenheimer Gallery at Reed College, respectively.
